St1 and Q Power are starting a pilot project in Vantaa, where the companies will pilot the production of biomethane from carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The goal is to make the method profitable, which could help combat the climate change and increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The pilot project utilizes the carbon dioxide produced during the production of ST1’s biorefinery operating in Vantaa. Carbon dioxide is captured and fed with hydrogen to Q Power’s bioreactor, where it produces biomethane. The final product is pure biomethane, which can be used as transport fuel.
Q Power’s technology has been developed by utilizing microbiota isolated from a Finnish swamp. The pilot phase lasts three months, and during this time Q Power’s pilot unit is integrated into the biorefinery. In addition, a refueling point is connected to the pilot unit, from which directly produced gas is refueled in the gas cars participating in the pilot.
Q Power’s technology offers concrete solutions to combat climate change. Synthetic fuels / e-fuels will play a key role in the energy transition, especially in industries where reducing carbon dioxide emissions is otherwise challenging.
“For us, emissions are raw materials that can be used to significantly increase sustainable biomethane production. We are very satisfied that with the pilot that has been launched, together with St1, we can test concrete solutions for combating climate change in an industrial environment”, says Q Power’s new CEO Eero Paunonen.
