The collaboration paves the way for large-scale renewable e-methane production in Åland, integrating hydrogen, carbon capture, and synthetic fuel production into a single energy system.
Åland, Finland – March 20, 2026 – RedRock Energy Ab, a developer of renewable energy projects, and Q-Power Oy, a Finnish technology company specializing in biological Power-to-Methane solutions, today announced the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) regarding the potential delivery of biological methane synthesis and liquefaction technology for the EnergyPark Hellesby project in Åland.
EnergyPark Hellesby is an integrated renewable energy project combining electricity generation, hydrogen production, and e-fuel production in one coordinated system. The project aims to support the transition towards climate-neutral fuels and strengthen Finland´s emerging green energy ecosystem.
The project is also part of the broader ABB-led H2 Springboard ecosystem, where industrial partners collaborate to accelerate the development, financing and scaling of hydrogen-based clean energy solutions. The project represents a strategic step toward building scalable hydrogen and e-fuel value chains in the Nordic region and strengthening Europe’s industrial transition toward climate-neutral energy systems.
Under the LOI, the parties will explore the potential delivery and implementation of a biological methanation and liquefaction plant at EnergyPark Hellesby, with Q-Power acting as the primary technology partner during the project’s development phases.
“This collaboration represents an important step in developing integrated energy systems that combine renewable electricity, hydrogen and synthetic fuels. EnergyPark Hellesby has the potential to demonstrate how multiple technologies can work together to create scalable green fuel production,” said Anders Wiklund, CEO of RedRock Energy Ab.
The preliminary concept includes a biological methanation facility with an estimated capacity of 17 MW, capable of producing approximately 10,000 tonnes of e-methane annually. The facility would also include a liquefaction plant, cryogenic storage and truck loading infrastructure for distribution.
· Enable industrial-scale production of renewable e-methane in Finland
· Integrate renewable hydrogen, carbon utilization and synthetic fuel production in a single energy system
· Accelerate decarbonization of transport, maritime and hard‑to‑abate industrial sectors
· Strengthen Finland’s role as a frontrunner in next‑generation renewable energy systems
“Biological methanation is an efficient and scalable way to convert renewable hydrogen and carbon dioxide into synthetic methane. Through this cooperation we aim to advance the development of industrial-scale Power-to-Methane solutions and demonstrate their role in future energy systems,” said Ilkka Herlin, Chairman of the Board of Q-Power.
The collaboration also includes potential joint participation in national and international funding and innovation programs, as well as cooperation during the PRE-FEED and FEED development phases of the project.
The project is also linked to the ABB-led H2 Springboard initiative, enabling concrete collaboration within the H2 Springboard ecosystem for the development and scaling of new clean energy solutions. Through this collaboration, industrial partners work together on coordinated national and international funding applications, technology development, and value chain integration across hydrogen and e-fuel projects. EnergyPark Hellesby is intended to serve as a blueprint for future integrated clean energy concepts, supporting scalable deployment both domestically and as an exportable concept to international markets.
