Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant and synthetic methane production facility will be built by P2X Solution in Harjavalta. Preparatory work on the site has already started in early autumn. Today we are celebrating a historic occasion; today was the foundation stone laying ceremony for the facility and the Finnish hydrogen industry.
As the Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä stated in his opening speech, history was being made today. Harjavalta’s green hydrogen production has reached this point as a forerunner. However, this is just the beginning, as investment decisions will be made on many projects this year as well. Minister Lintilä stated: “I am convinced that the success story of domestic energy starts here“.
“We are honored to be involved in accomplishing the carbon neutrality and environmental goals shared by Finland and the whole of Europe, in both industry and transport by producing green hydrogen and renewable synthetic fuels. The production of green hydrogen is an important part of a renewable energy system and in addition, the synthetic methane production plant will support the carbon neutrality goals of the transport sector.” CEO of P2X Solution Herkko Plit comments.
The synthetic methane production plant that is being built in Harjavalta is large, even on a global scale. “This is the first synthetic methanation plant on this scale, as far as we know.” Comments Q Power’s CEO Eero Paunonen and continues “We are proud to be part of this pioneering work together with P2X Solutions, this project is important in achieving energy self-sufficiency and climate goals”
Synthetic methane stores energy very well and therefore it is highly usable in many applications and is also suitable for direct use in existing gas infrastructure. Methane is produced by combining carbon dioxide (CO2) with hydrogen. The use of CO2 as a raw material for methane is particularly positive because this way carbon dioxide can be recycled instead of being released into the atmosphere. Thus, it is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
“Our technology has its roots in Finnish marshlands, where microbes have been generating methane for millions of years. As a result of excellent research and product development by our team, our technology is both efficient and modularly scalable according to customer needs. In addition, our microbes also tolerate impurities in the feed gas exceptionally well” Paunonen sums up the benefits of Q Power’s technology.
Q Power’s methanation is based on a microbiological process and its process efficiency is the highest in the market being 82%. The process is energy and cost-efficient because the bioreactor does not require mixing, pressurization, or continuous pumping of liquids. (Read more about the technology)

“Energy transition is inevitable – climate change is proceeding and demands for energy self-sufficiency are increasing. In the future, we expect to be able to inform about the construction of even larger facilities.” Paunonen comments.
The founding stone of the production facility is laid, and the construction can begin. Delivery and commissioning of both the hydrogen and methanation plants will take place in 2024 according to the schedule.
